Independence and Andersonville elementary students helped “Spread the Love” with a Valentine’s Day and peanut-butter-and-jelly themed food drive.
Students collected 129 jars at Independence Elementary and 100 at Andersonville Elementary throughout February.
“I was incredibly proud of the kids and their accomplishment and sense of pride from a very successful PB&J food drive,” said parent volunteer Beth Kirchner. “I really hope this will get bigger and better next year.”
Second graders in Jodee Blaszkowski’s class came up with the project as a community service to help stock Lighthouse North’s food pantry shelves, then delivered the donations last week.
Lighthouse Emergency Services helps about 700 families a month with emergency food supplies at its Clarkston and Pontiac locations.
“I’m happy you folks were able to help us help them,” said Connie Stapleton, manager of Lighthouse on Sashabaw Road in Independence Township. “When everyone puts in some, it becomes a lot.” ~Phil Custodio
