Brandon Twp.-Dennis Pennington loves to drive fast.
Some days speeds can top 125 mph.
But don’t expect local deputies to be writing any tickets soon’Pennington revs his vehicle up in about 80 feet indoors.
Dennis and Jan Pennington are the owners of Slot Car Crossing, 1581 S. Ortonville Road ( in the O’Malley’s Galley plaza). The business opened for racing in January.
‘We have something for every slot car racer here’whether first time or professional,? said Dennis.
‘From oval track racing similar to stock cars to road racing like grand prix to a scale 1/4 mile drag strip’it’s a lot of fun and plenty of action.?
Dennis and Jan operated a slot car facility in Holly for 16 years before relocating to the township.
‘Slot cars were my hobby that outgrew my basement and then outgrew my garage,? said Dennis, a retired Flint Public Schools custodian and Grand Blanc resident.
‘It’s very enjoyable and exciting. If you’ve never tried racing slot cars, stop by and see if it’s for you.?
Slot Car Crossing provides track and car rental or racers can bring their own equipment. The store is open for private parties, scout groups or car clubs.
‘We attract racers from all over Michigan,? he said. ‘Right now we’re the oldest racing shop in the state.?
Dennis said slot car racing was very popular in the 1960s with more than 100 such shops statewide.
‘When video games became popular slot car racing kind of died out,? he said. ‘But it’s still a great experience if you love speed and cars.?
Slot Car Crossing is open 3-9 p.m.,Wednesday-Friday, noon-9 p.m., Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday.
