James Folcik wants people to hear his love song.
Folcik has no formal music education, but has been writing songs and poetry for 40 years. About a year-and-a-half ago, the Clarkston resident decided to get one of his songs recorded in a studio, resulting in the ballad ‘Magic Love.?
The song has a gentle melody, with lyrics such as ‘If I had the magic to love you, I would have the magic to make you love me too. The magic is a mystic thing that only comes in the early spring.?
It’s one of his favorite pieces, he said.
‘I’ve always wanted to write music,? he said. ‘This is a good song, it tells a good story ? everyone I play it for loves it.?
One told him she wanted the song played at her wedding, he said.
He produced his song through Majestic Records Inc., a Texas-based company that provides a relatively inexpensive way for people to get a recording session for their original songs.
Majestic recorded his song with a six-instrument arrangement and singer Pat Callaway, and produced CDs and cassette tapes for him, as well as sheet music.
Folcik grew up in northern Michigan. He lived about 20 years in California, 16 in Hawaii, and a couple in Las Vegas. He moved out to Clarkston about three-and-a-half years ago to be closer to family.
Folcik said he hopes the song becomes a hit ? if it does, he would use the money to travel more. But he still enjoys writing music.
‘It just comes to me,? he said. ‘There’s no rhyme or reason to it. The words come to me or they don’t.?
Inspiration tends to hit him in his dreams, he said.
‘Words come to me when I’m napping,? he said. ‘I’m playing with a song that I thought of yesterday afternoon.?
