PowerSchool helps parents check progress

Parents in Oxford can no longer claim they’re in the dark when it comes to their child’s grades and attendance at school.
The district has replaced their Edline.net service, which allowed middle and high school students to check their grades and other information through the school’s website, with a more advanced service called PowerSchool Parent.
‘There’s a lot more information we can get to parents than with Edline,? said Tim Throne, Director of Technology for Oxford Schools.
With PowerSchool, parents receive their own ID and password so they can keep up with their child’s progress. With Edline, Throne said parents with multiple children in the district were only allowed to check on one student during the school year, but with PowerSchool, parents can check on all their kids.
Aside from grades and attendance, PowerSchool allows parents and students to receive e-mail alerts when new grades are posted, receive e-mails with school or class information, see whether or not homework has been turned in, access the school’s daily bulletin, see how much money is left in their lunch account, see what bus they’re supposed to ride and read notes from teachers.
‘I think (parents) will see these types of reports as a great benefit,? Throne said, adding that last year, 70 percent of Oxford parents used the system on a regular basis.
Students can also use the program to see class assignments, links for their classes and to download documents for their courses.
Printed report cards and progress reports will still be sent out by the district.
