Every spring, members of the United States House of Representatives host a nation-wide arts competition for high school students, with five finalists selected for each district. This year, one of the finalists in Congressman Peters? 2011 Congressional Art Competition is from Lake Orion High School: senior Sarah Mueller for her piece ‘Slide.?
‘Slide? is a mixed media piece, a photograph blurred with paint and pastels.
‘It’s one of 12 concentration pieces in my Advanced Placement Art Portfolio,? Mueller said. ‘At the end of the AP Art Portfolio class we’re required to submit a piece for the show.?
Students Paige Stevens and Grace Wittbold were also given honorable mentions for their respective works, ‘Pieces? and ‘Afternoon Tea.?
Voting to choose the Congressional Art Competition’s winner closes on May 8 at midnight. The winner will be flown to Washington D.C. with a guest to meet their peers from across the country, along with professional artists and members of Congress. If ‘Slide? won, it would be displayed in the capitol building.
‘It would be a great experience to meet these professional artists and have a piece hanging in the tunnel under the capitol building,? Mueller said.
