Dear editor,
I am writing to you with regard to some news that I hope you will share with your readers.
My son, Charles Towne, is attending the Univeristy of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
He is a 2005 Lake Orion graduate and is overall captain of all three (A,B,C) of U of M’s Mock Trial teams.
The Mock Trial teams compete with top universities across the nation including Harvard, Cornell, etc.
If their scores in regionals are high enough, they qualify for nationals.
This year, the Mock Trial National competition, will be held in Memphis, TN.
All three of U of M’s Mock Trial teams did very well this year, with the A and C teams qualifing for nationals.
So, you may ask, why is this note-worthy and why should you consider helping?
In addition to the U of M A team finishing first in the last regional, one of the greatest aspects about the team is that they are student-governed and student-led, which means U of M competes in this national arena under the direction of the students. Most other teams are under faculty advisement.
Also, the team is led by one of Lake Orion’s own, Charles Towne.
The teams could use additional funding. Currently, the students fundraise by cleaning the U of M Crysler Arena after events in addition to supplying their own funds.
If there are some U of M fans who may wish to contribute to the team, they would be very happy to have any donations to help the team with expenses.
Charles can be reached at 248-762-2836 if you have additional questions.
Thank you,
Joyce Towne
