Taylor Kanigowski of Clarkston danced her way to a state title, winning Miss Dance of Michigan 2013 at Dance Masters of Michigan solo title pageant, Feb. 9-10.
Katie Humphreys of Holly was awarded the title of Teen Miss Dance of Michigan 2013. Eighteen local dancers 10-17 years old, students at The Dance Shoppe in Waterford, competed in the pageant.
Both girls have been dancing since they were 3, and spend at least 15 hours a week at the studio dancing. To win these prestigious awards, the girls participated in audition classes, interview with the judges, and solo performance onstage.
Many other students of The Dance Shoppe placed as runners-up, and semi-finalists to the title.
Kanigowski, 16, is the daughter of Kelly and Brian Kanigowski of Clarkston. Humphreys, 13, is the daughter of Michelle and Tim Humphreys.
Katie and Taylor will head to New Orleans in July to compete for national titles.
Giving up titles from last year were four Dance Shoppe students ? Lauren Tate (Petite), Nicole Kennedy (Junior), Emma Seidel (Teen), and Hannah Hamlin (Miss). Nicole holds the national title of Jr Miss Dance of America, awarded this past summer, and will return to New Orleans as well to give up her title.
