It’s not unusual for Dr. Jaime Abbott to see veterans in her dental office, but when a couple of veterans – and her father – showed up recently she was stunned by the reason for their visit.
The American Legion Chief Pontiac Post 377 in Clarkston presented Abbott with a plaque October 26, honoring her work in supporting veterans.
“I was very surprised and very honored,” said Abbott, an Oxford resident since 2004, who runs a dental clinic on Waldon Road in Orion Township and another clinic in Montrose.
Joyce Doyle, a nurse who is a member of the American Legion Post 16 in Lapeer, helped arrange the surprise.
“We’re honoring her because of all the support she gives to all the military veterans. Both the active and reserves and the homeless,” Doyle said.
“I think it’s totally awesome what she’s done,” said David West, who is on the executive board of the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 377 in Clarkston. “Anyone who helps veterans is very worthy of recognition.”
Michigan Detachment Commander Carvin “Huey” Chapman presented Abbott with the plaque.
“Anyone who helps a veteran out, in my opinion, deserves a plaque and recognition,” Chapman said. “A veteran won’t go without anything if I’m around. I’ll go anywhere to help a veteran out, and she’s done a lot to help veterans.”
For Abbott, doing what she can to help military veterans is just part of what she does; certainly nothing for which she sought recognition.
“They’ve done so much for us and it’s just a small part where I can give back and help out,” Abbott said. “I just enjoy supporting them.”
Dr. Abbott’s efforts include:
· Recognizing veterans with a yearly brunch at her office, including a drawing for oral care supplies valued at more than $200.
· Providing oral care and personal items for 50 homeless veterans from the Detroit area for the past two years (presented to the veterans by Post 377).
· Filling 30 Christmas Stockings for homeless veterans.
· Providing “goodie boxes” to deployed military members through Desert Angels.
· Filling backpacks for homeless veterans through Ray of Hope.
· Collecting coats and warm clothes for veterans.
“Her strong commitment and dedication to our military members has been much appreciated,” Doyle said.
