Jump Into Reading

A first is happening at North Sashabaw Elementary ? The Media Center is open this summer.
The idea was concocted by a focus group of teachers who generated the Jump Into Reading program to keep students reading throughout the summer months.
‘We offer a lot of books in the library and some children can’t get to the public library, so we thought it would be nice to open our library for the summer. Children are familiar with our library and it is a great way to keep them reading in the summer,? said Sandy Chenet, NSE general education partner, reading and writing support.
Soon-to-be second grader Benjamin Ehrhard, 7, came into the library with his mother Pam, 34, and his brother, Patrick, 5, to pick out a space book. The brothers are avid astrology fans and picked out books on the universe.
‘We even have Apollo XIII on DVD, and we have every episode of Star Wars, except III,? said Benjamin.
Teachers from NSE volunteer their time Wednesdays from 10:30 -11a.m. and 1-1:30 p.m., to read to students and help them choose books. There are generally two books read: one for the upper elementary students 3-5 and one for K-2.
The books chosen last week were Bark George by Jules Feiffer, a funny book about a dog, and Water Dance by Thomas Locker. Students listened intently while third grade teacher Carrie Ouellette read.
Students from NSE are welcome to join the readings that will continue on Wednesdays through August 10. Parents are required to accompany their children.
