Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan Troop 70220 donated about 400 pounds of food to Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan on’Nov. 16.
The food was collected as part of the troop’s participation in the joint Scouting for Food project, an annual food collection project headed up by Boy Scouts Great Lakes Council. This year, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts joined forces for the first time on the project in an effort to collect 250,000 pounds of donated food throughout the southeast Michigan region.
Sixteen members of the Girl Scout Junior troop, grades 3-5, helped fill a Gleaners van with the food donations. As part of the project, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts spent the week of Nov. 7-14 distributing specially marked donation collection bags to homes in neighborhoods throughout the region.
Troop 70220 sought the support of Bailey Elementary School. The food donations filled four of the Gleaners boxes, each holding about 100-150 pounds of food.
The Scouting for Food project helps to shore up Gleaners? supplies in time for the holidays, as more food is needed for children, seniors and adults in need.
