Goodrich cuts may include 12 teachers, outsourcing

On May 10 the school board will conduct a special meeting at the Goodrich High School community room to discuss a host of options to contend with a $2.1 million deficit for the 2010-11 school year.
Goodrich Superintendent John Fazer and school boardmembers discussed a host of budgetary cuts for a three year budget during a workshop on Monday night. The reductions are necessary due to several factors including less state per-pupil funding, sagging enrollment and payment of a $576,375 debt following the conclusion of a court battle.
The proposed budget of $18,322,541 with an estimated $16,313,792 budget is being considered for the 2010-11 school year.
‘We are considering many options right now,? said Mike Tripp, school board president. ‘The list of cuts have been examined and some items are going to be acted on quickly while others will require more deliberation. Keep in mind there will still be a high standard and quality education at Goodrich.?
Other options may include changing the current block scheduling to standard scheduling for students.
The change will allow the district to reduce 19 teachers rather than the 12 proposed, added Tripp. The block switch could save the district about $400,000, according to school officials.
In addition, the district is considering outsourcing for cafeteria services, busing and janitorial. A budget will be in place by June 30.
