With a buzzer-beating shot, North Farminton Raiders wrenched the lead from the Lady Dragons, Feb. 18, giving them a 49-48 win.
The Dragons’s would-be hero, Maddi Gagen, nailed a three-pointer with 11 seconds left, looking for a 48-47 win. But with one second on the clock, Raiders took a two point shot and the win.
In the first quarter, Lady Dragons scored early with two points. North Farmington soon echoed their shots and continued to lead the rest of the quarter. The end of the first showed the Raiders leading by the small margin of three.
In the second, Lake Orion continued to trail, though only by a few points. By halftime, Raiders were on top, with a 27-21 tally.
The third quarter brought a change of pace in the game when Lady Dragons came back looking for the lead. With a 1:30 left in the quarter, Jackie Hood caught Lake Orion’s score up to North Farmington’s. Dragons ended the quarter ahead, 36-35.
Lake Orion was able to keep the lead going into the fourth, answering all of North Farmington’s points until the clocked ticked down to thirty seconds when Raiders assumed the lead, 47-45.
With eleven seconds left in the game, Gagen took back the lead with a three-point shot.
However, in an upsetting turn of events, North Farmington took the lead, and the win, from Lake Orion with one second on the clock. The final score placed the Raiders on top, 49-48.
Leading scorers included Marisa Secontine with 15 points, Alexis Haan with 10 points, Jackie Hood with 12 points and Gagen with nine.
‘We are looking to do the best we can,? said Head Coach Steve Roberts. ‘We had a balanced scoring attack, and got the right shooters in the right spot at the right times.?
He added, ‘They have to play their best basketball.?
Lady Dragons now 10-7 in league play, with all of their final scores in a ten-point margin
Two of the Dragon’s losses have come down to the last five seconds of the game. Overtime has also determined if the Dragons would walk away with a win or a loss in more than one match.
‘We are making the most of our situation. Even though we have had tough losses, it is how we handle it.? Roberts said.
Districts for the Lady Dragons start March first and Roberts and his team is looking to make it as far as they can.
The Dragons look to take on West Bloomfield, Lathrup, and Clarkston on the 23, 24, and 26 of February.
