Walk this way in Independence

In the spirit of getting people of all ages off the couch and into a more active lifestyle, Independence Township Parks and Recreation and the Independence Township Senior Center are once again taking part in the Walk Michigan! program.
Over the span of nine dates through June and July, participants will be able to enjoy Independence Township’s beautiful parks.
‘We are trying to get participants ranging from toddlers on up to seniors. We really want to reach out to the community as a whole,? said Lisa McCoy, recreation specialist with Independence Township Parks and Recreation. ‘People can reduce stress and exercise at the same time by walking.?
The trail set up for Walk Michigan! is one mile long and volunteer guides ensure that no one looses their way.
‘Almost everyone can walk and it is a beautiful path,? said Margaret Bartos, coordinator for the Senior Center.
The first walk of the season was on June 1 at Clintonwood Park. The remaining schedule is: June 9 at Clintonwood at 6:30 p.m.; June 14 at Clintonwood at 10 a.m.; June 16 at Baycourt Park at 6:30 p.m.; June 20 at Clintonwood at 6:30 p.m.; July 5 at Baycourt Park at 2:00 p.m.; July 6 at Sashabaw Plains at 10 a.m.; and July 14 at Independence Oaks at 6:30 p.m.
‘There are a lot of things to see. You get a whole view of the park and all that we have to offer as you walk,? said McCoy.
At the end of each walk there will be raffles for prizes such as a t-shirt. Those who participate in all nine dates will be entered into a raffle for a $50 gold gift certificate which can be used on Senior Center or Parks and Recreation merchandise or programs.
The Michigan Parks Recreation Association started the Walk Michigan! pilot program in 1985 and there is no fee to participate.
