2007 was another great year for Oxford-Addison Youth Assistance (OAYA) when it came to helping the area’s at-risk kids.
Last week, the group held its annual meeting/breakfast at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Orion to review its progress and honor volunteers who are the backbone of OAYA.
Let’s take a glance at some statistics:
n Caseworker Hank Szlenkier worked with 98 at-risk youths.
n OAYA assisted 48 youths in attending a variety of different summer camps.
n The annual duck race netted OAYA $2,237 in funding.
n OAYA received $1,926 in grant money from Safe and Drug Free Schools.
n Two shoplifting prevention presentations were held at Oxford Middle School for 677 sixth-graders.
n OAYA’s Skill Building program provided positive, educational activities for 15 kids.
n Sixty kids were honored for their good deeds and community service at OAYA’s annual Youth Recognition event.
n At OAYA’s annual Christmas party, 32 kids and their families shared a meal together, played games and received gifts from Santa.
n Mentors P.L.U.S. had two adult-to-child matches. The program provides children with positive adult role models to do one-on-one activities with on a weekly basis.
Youth Assistance is constantly looking for new volunteers to help dream up ideas, administer programs, serve as mentors or offer a little good old-fashioned elbow grease.
