Young golfers are league champions

The Oxford Hills Junior Golf League wrapped up another exciting season of play last week with three local youths earning trophies.
Lake Orion residents Evan Young and Griffen Beeler earned first place honors in the first and second flights respectively, while Spencer Christen, of Oxford, was named champion of the third flight.
Sixty youths, ages 10-15, competed in the seven-week league at Oxford Hills Golf and Country Club on E. Drahner Road, east of M-24.
After the first two weeks of play, the kids are divided by score and ability into three flights, each consisting of 20 players.
‘We try to flight them so the kids are more competitive,? said Harry Hogan, who’s been running the league on and off for the last 30 years. ‘We don’t put someone who shoots a good score with someone who’s just beginning.?
There was a bit of excitement in the third flight as Christen and another player, Alex Naughton, tied for first place. It took an additional two holes to finally break the tie and leave Christen the undisputed champion.
‘We’ve had playoffs before, but it’s never gone more than one hole,? Hogan said. ‘This is the first time we’ve gone two holes.?
Oxford Hills Junior Golf League was established in the late 1960s and is always a popular summer activity for local youth.
‘We have a waiting list every year,? Hogan said. ‘The kids really like it. They have a lot of fun.?
