It was just over a week before Christmas when someone crept into the nativity display in front of Lewis E. Wint and Son Funeral Home and stole baby Jesus.
They took his cradle, too.
Funeral director Bill Wint said he was speechless when the theft was discovered Sun., Dec. 16.
‘I don’t know how to put it in words,? said Wint, noting the 4-foot long baby Jesus figure and cradle were secured to the display’s plywood foundation. ‘We just want him back home, no questions asked.?
The large display arrived at the funeral home about four years ago, and has adorned the front lawn every Christmas since.
‘We thought we were doing something special for the community when we made that large capital investment,? Wint said. ‘We’re very sensitive people, being funeral directors, and we’ve never, ever had anything like this happen before. Ever.?
Wint said he couldn’t imagine who would steal the baby Jesus from a nativity scene.
‘I’ve made some mistakes in my life,? he said. ‘But I sure wouldn’t want to walk around knowing I stole the baby Jesus.?
Funeral director Tim Currier concurred.
‘We’re very disappointed,? he said. ‘We look forward to setting up the display and celebrating the season every year. This is so disappointing.?
A police report was filed, and anyone with information on the theft is asked to call the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Independence Township substation at 248-620-4968.
