Got any ideas as to what Oxford Village should do with the former industrial site it recently purchased at 98 Glaspie Street?
The public is invited to tour the site on Monday, May 1 and Monday, May 8.
Both tours begin at 6 p.m.
‘We’re looking for ideas on how we could utilize the building and the space,? said Councilman George Del Vigna. ‘Any suggestions would be more than welcome.?
On March 16, the village closed on its $700,000 purchase of 98 Glaspie Street, a former 3.42-acre industrial site with an approximately 20,000-square-foot vacant building.
A 5,600-square-foot quonset hut used to sit on the eastern end of the property, but it was destroyed by a fire in September 2005.
Over the years, the property was home to Smith Silo, Spearing Tool & Manufacturing Co. and most recently, Sea Link International, a custom manufacturing company.
The property is bordered by Scripter Park’s baseball fields to the north and the village’s water system and DPW facilities to the south. To the east is Scripter Park and Round Lake.
‘It’s bordered by village property on three sides,? said Manager Joe Young.
Various ideas have been bandied about as possible uses for the property including some type of skating facility, a community center for senior citizens and local youth, and volleyball and basketball courts.
‘I can see $1 million going into the entire facility to renovate it and bring it up to code, make it safe,? said Councilman Tom Benner.
Benner was the one who suggested setting up tours of the site to hear from the public.
‘I would like to have some input from the residents before we spend any taxpayer dollars,? he said.
