Sluggers earn their share of FML championship

Oxford’s varsity baseball team clinched its share of the Flint Metro League Championship by winning four straight against Linden and Lapeer West.
‘Our whole goal was to keep our destiny in our own hands and we did that,? said Coach Kurt Nuss. ‘I’m incredibly proud of these guys. They’ve worked hard and did what they had to do.?
Against Linden on May 15, Oxford won 4-1 and 7-1.
Kyle Teague struck out 15 batters and allowed three hits in the first game.
Alex Seinar, James McLean, Justin Ziegelbaur, Mitch Stefanski and Geoff Charles each had two hits.
In game two, Russ Luxton struck out 9 batters and allowed 5 hits.
Don Pohl had 3 RBIs and 3 hits. Seinar also contributed 2 hits.
On Monday against Lapeer West, Oxford won two shutouts 5-0 and 6-0.
Teague struck out 9 batters and allowed only 2 hits in the first game.
At the plate, Teague added 2 RBIs. McLean, Pohl and Luxton each had an RBI.
In game two, Luxton struck out 8 batters and allowed 4 hits.
Eric Turk and Pohl each had 2 hits and 2 RBIs.
Oxford is still tied with Clio for first place in the FML.
In order to maintain that tie, Clio must sweep Lapeer East on Thursday.
The Wildcats will host a tournament this weekend during which the team will play Detroit Catholic Central and Traverse City West on Friday then Lowell and Walled Lake Western on Saturday.
Nuss said this will make for a good tune-up for predistricts, which begin Tuesday against Rochester Adams at Lake Orion.
‘We feel we can compete with anybody,? Nuss said.
