Road work ahead in village

Attention Oxford Village residents ? get ready for some late season road construction.
Last week, the village council awarded the Clarkston-based Cadillac Asphalt a $703,909.65 contract to work on four streets in much need of repair.
‘They can hopefully start the last week of September,? said Manager Joe Young, who noted a preconstruction meeting is set for Friday, Sept. 21.
Plans call for reconstructing Mechanic Street (from M-24 to the village limits) and Lincoln Street (from M-24 to Mechanic). Curb and gutters would be installed along with storm drains.
Crawford Street, between Mechanic and Hovey, will also be reconstructed with curb and gutters plus storm drains.
Hovey Street, from Moyer to where it dead-ends at the First Baptist Church property, will simply be resurfaced.
‘Is there a big benefit to the taxpayers to have all this done at once?? asked Councilman Chris Bishop. ‘Are those streets bad enough??
‘In my opinion, they are bad enough,? said DPW Superintendent Don Brantley. ‘They’re overdue.?
Considering the remaining sections of Hovey and Crawford streets were previously repaired, Brantley said doing the above streets would mean ‘that whole quadrant would be complete.?
The project is expected to be substantially complete by Nov. 9.
‘They need to be 90 percent complete otherwise they will be assessed $700 a day,? Young said.
Everything must be completed by Nov. 16.
