Public hearing on farm market set for April 12

A seasonal farm market could be opening in Oxford Township in a few weeks, but first, the owners must obtain approval for a special land use from the planning commission.
The Brandon Township-based Scott’s Farm Market, owned by Vernon and Cheryl Scott, is seeking to erect an outdoor sales area on a vacant parcel located on the east side of M-24, north of Helen St and south of E. Market St.
A public hearing regarding this request has been scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, April 12 at the Oxford Veterans Memorial Civic Center (28 N. Washington St.).
If approved, Vernon indicated he’d like to open the market on Tuesday, April 17 and operate it six days a week through mid-to-late October. The plan is to be open from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
Depending on the season, the market will sell bedding plants (annual and perennials), fresh vegetables and herbs, top soil, pumpkins, gourds and straw.
Last year, the market was operated from a vacant parcel in downtown Oxford’s northwest quadrant.
The Scotts decided to move this year because the proposed location affords the market ‘more visibility? to traffic passing by and easier access for customers, according to Farm Manager Andrew Scott, a 2005 graduate of Oxford High School.
‘Downtown really didn’t work for us,? he said. ‘We were so blocked in, not many people could see us until it was too late (to stop).?
Vernon noted how the proposed location has a turnaround right in front, so customers ‘can zip in and zip out.?
The Scott family farm, which is located at 4615 Ramsey Rd., has been around since 1846.
‘We’re on our seventh generation,? Vernon said. ‘Our granddaughter (Skylar, 3) loves the farm, so hopefully she’ll keep it going.
‘She has a pony to take care of and she’s right out there with all of us, picking vegetables and planting, even though she’s tiny. She’s real smart and (advanced) for her age.?
Some of the delicacies that can be found at the Scott farm include sweet corn, tomatoes, green beans, peppers and fresh herbs such as cilantro and rosemary.
