An 18-year-old Oxford man was cited by village police for reckless driving after he crashed a 1986 Pontiac Grand Prix into a large tree on W. Burdick St. on Thursday, Oct. 27.
The northbound driver was speeding along Pontiac St. when he ran through the stop sign at W. Burdick St. during a left turn, lost control of his car and hit a tree located in front of Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors Bossardet Chapel, according to Police Sgt. Mike Solwold.
‘He had to have been going pretty fast to do that,? the sergeant said. ‘He hit the tree head-on.?
The driver was reportedly uninjured, however, his two passengers, both of whom were under the age of 18, sustained minor injuries and were transported to the hospital.
‘They were pretty lucky,? Solwold said.
Given the crash occurred around 3 p.m., a time when schools are letting out and the overall traffic volume is beginning to increase, Solwold indicated the accident could have been much worse.
‘We’re just glad he didn’t clip someone else in the process,? he said. ‘Being that time of day, we’re fortunate he didn’t sideswipe somebody or T-bone somebody or hit someone on the sidewalk.?
Solwold noted it’s ‘very rare? to have a driver run the stop sign at Pontiac and W. Burdick streets.
‘That’s just something you don’t see,? he said.
