Even a water tower can’t hide its Cat pride.
Per the OHS Student Council’s request, the Oxford Wildcats logo will be painted across the township’s new 1 million gallon water tower on Oxford Road.
‘I think it’s just a tremendous opportunity to show some pride in the community,? said OHS Principal Mike Schweig.
Last week, the township board voted to advance the OHS Student Council the necessary monies from its general fund to have the Oxford Wildcats logo painted on the tower.
‘This is to show pride in our school system,? said Trustee Charles Kniffen.
The estimated cost for the stencil, paint and labor to recreate the logo on the tower is approximately $9,100.
The tower itself will be painted a light shade of blue, the same as the one in the Red Barn subdivision. It will cost the township approximately $145,000 to paint it.
A contract between the township and student council for repayment of the borrowed funds before the end of the 2006-07 school year is being drawn up per the board’s direction.
Township attorney Gary Rentrop agreed to donate his time to draft the simple contract.
Catherine DePasquale, the OHS teacher who serves as student council adviser, said they can repay the township by January or earlier.
DePasquale noted the student council has approximately $10,000 in its treasury following homecoming.
In addition to that money, the council is planning to organize another dance prior to Christmas break as a new fund-raiser, she said.
Representatives from the township and OHS student council are expected to meet with the paint contractor at the water tower site 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4 to discuss the work.
Supervisor Bill Dunn last week secured a $1,000 donation to the student council for the project from Christopher Investment Co. in Auburn Hills, the firm which owns the Lake Villa Manufactured Home Community.
‘Once again Mr. (Greg) Christopher has proven his generosity to the people of Oxford,? he said. ‘What a wonderful gift to the kids and the community.?
