The term ‘mobile home? got a whole new meaning April 19 as workers from the Oxford-based Mitchell Corporation moved the houses formerly known as 32 and 36 E. Burdick St.
Tree limbs were cut, power lines lifted and street lights temporarily removed as the wide loads were slowly towed down E. Burdick St. by a backhoe loader.
Cottage Ct. is the new location for 32 E. Burdick, while 36 sits on the old railroad right-of-way across from the Oxford Post Office, waiting for its new site on Broadway Street.
The house that currently sits there is expected to be demolished soon.
The now-vacant E. Burdick Street properties, which includes a total of three parcels (addresses 32, 36 and 38), are owned by the Oxford DDA, which purchased them for a total of $585,619 in 2002.
Combined the parcels are approximately 15,070 square feet, however, 32 E. Burdick is separated from 36 and 38 E. Burdick by Mill Street
Voters rejected giving the village permission to sell that 45-foot-wide portion of Mill Street during an August 2003 special election.
The DDA is planning to sell the properties, but must first change their zoning to C-1 (Central Business District). They are currently zoned C-2 (General Business) and Office/Service.
Amanda Cassidy, executive director of the DDA, said the authority would like to see the properties developed as some type of ‘mixed use,? meaning retail/office with residential living space above, in order to fit the new Downtown Master Plan still in the process of being finalized.
‘We’re looking for a certain something,? she said.
