Jack LeRoy is retiring as chief of the Oxford Fire Department to become chief of the Oxford Fire Department.
Township officials Dec. 14 approved a one-year contract with LeRoy for $78,500 (no benefits) to be chief of the new township fire department effective January 1, 2006.
At the end of this month, LeRoy will retire as chief of the joint township-village fire department owned and operated by the Oxford Public Fire & EMS Commission, which is in the process of dissolving per a court order.
It appears come Jan. 1, the township will become the sole owner and operator of the fire department.
The village expects to be paid for its share of equity in the department, which has yet to be determined by an appraisal of all the fire assets. Village officials believe their share to be about $2 million.
Per his new contract, LeRoy will now be a township employee.
LeRoy’s new contract represents a $24,413 savings for taxpayers. If he would have continued with the same pay and benefits he had as an OPFEC employee, it would have cost the township $116,848 next year (that’s a base pay of $61,443 plus benefits).
Under his new contract, LeRoy will cost the township $92,435, which includes a $78,500 salary; $5,000 for responding to after hours calls; $6,388 for Social Security and $2,547 for workers comp.
Under his OPFEC contract, LeRoy was never paid for after hours calls.
Now, he will be receive $16.08 per hour (the rate a senior paid-on-call firefighter receives) for these calls.
Welcome to Oxford Chief LeRoy, we’ve heard good things about you. Good luck in your new job.
