Survivors of those deadly tornadoes that swept through Kentucky earlier this month are getting a helping hand from students at Lakeville Elementary.
Last week, third-graders in teacher Maureen Magdaleno’s class set up a lemonade stand in the school cafeteria to raise funds to help tornado victims rebuild their lives.
‘They’ve been very enthusiastic,? Magdaleno said.
Selling both regular and pink lemonade, the students served up cup after cup, raising an impressive $140, which will be donated to the American Red Cross.
Even students from Oxford High School’s DECA Club stopped in to purchase some refreshing beverages.
It was third-grader Jenna Mehlberg who came up with the fund-raising idea.
‘It’s going really good,? she said. ‘We have a lot of money.?
Magdaleno explained her students were studying how people share resources and in light of what happened in Kentucky, ‘they started to think about what communities do when they lose their resources overnight.?
‘They’re learning that not everybody has the same resources available to them,? she noted. ‘Sometimes, even if you do have resources, a disaster can come and all of the sudden, you need others to share their resources with you.?
After seeing some on-line photos of people with ‘no houses? and kids with ‘no toys,? Mehlberg decided her class should help them.
It was decided that money was the best resource Lakeville could send because it could be spent on whatever the survivors truly needed.
Classmates Austin Rowland-Montes and Logan Edwards came up with a business plan for the lemonade stand and presented it to the principal for approval.
‘I’m very proud of Jenna for taking action and her classmates for supporting this. Everybody’s chipped in,? Magdaleno said.
