Don’t forget your White Cane

Members of the Oxford Lions Club will be around town Friday, April 28 and Saturday, April 29, distributing their familiar White Canes and seeking donations. Lions members will be downtown at the Washington/Burdick intersection and Oxford Bank’s main branch. If enough volunteers are available, members will also be at Drahner and M-24 and the S. Mill/Burdick intersection. Monies raised from the White Cane fund-raiser are used for sight conservation projects such as free eyeglasses and eye exams for those in need locally, Leader Dogs for the Blind in Rochester and the Penrickton Center for Blind Children in Taylor. The Oxford Lions hope to raise at least $4,000 this year. For more information about the Oxford Lions or becoming a member call President Charlie Garrard at (248) 628-1993. Photo by C.J. Carnacchio.

Members of the Oxford Lions Club will be around town Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30 conducting their annual White Cane Sale. Lions will be selling canes at the intersection of Washington and Burdick streets and at Oxford Bank. Proceeds from the sale will benefit Leader Dogs for the Blind, Bear Lake Camp, Beaumont Silent Children, plus scholarships for Oxford students and eyeglasses and white canes for local residents. Pictured are Lions Pauline Morden, Charlie Garrard, Ken Marsh, Bob Tripp, Joe Polacek, Dave Morden and Gail Schlict.

Members of the Oxford Lions Club will be out and about in the village from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Friday, May 2 and Saturday, May 3 selling their little plastic white canes. Conducted since 1946, this sale is one of two annual fund-raisers the club depends upon to finance its humanitarian work. From eyeglasses and Christmas baskets to clothing for local needy folks and state-level Lions Club projects, the service club always puts its funds to good use. Locally, the Lions support Oxford -Addison Youth Assistance, scholarships for OHS seniors, the Boys and Girls Club, and Michigan Youth Leadership.
