Curves food drive nets 5,700 lbs.

A local women’s gym helped a group gain nearly 6,000 pounds over the weekend.
Downtown Oxford’s Curves delivered a total of 5,700 pounds of canned goods and other non-perishable food items to Oxford/Orion FISH Saturday morning following the fitness center’s annual food drive.
‘It’s a huge help,? said Valerie Cass, pantry coordinator for FISH. ‘We’ve been giving away almost 9,000 pounds of food a month.
Curves? donation amounts to about 19 days worth of food, ‘which doesn’t sound like much,? according to Cass, ‘but with what we have now, it will carry us through the beginning of May.?
That’s when the Oxford and Lake Orion Post Offices conduct their annual food drive for FISH.
Last year, Curves? members collected 3,092 pounds of food. This year the gym set an ambitious goal of 5,000 pounds.
Curves surpassed its goal thanks to a 773-pound donation from the office staff at Royal Roofing in Orion along with a 104-pound contribution from Ron and Wendy Brabo, owners of A&A Flowers in downtown Oxford.
Sherman Publications, Inc. donated its delivery truck and a driver to transport the nearly three tons of food to the FISH Pantry in Thomas.
‘It was just fabulous that the community this year chipped in and contributed to the Curves drive,? Cass said.
‘Oxford and Lake Orion have always supported FISH to the point where we have one of the finest pantries around.?
