OXFORD TWP. ? A two-car garage became a three-car garage Monday morning when the driver of a pickup truck lost control and crashed into it.
A 27-year-old Brandon Twp. man was eastbound on Seymour Lake Rd. in his 2006 Ford F-250 truck when he ‘blacked out? around 10:23 a.m., left the roadway and ran full speed into the attached garage at 724 Seymour Lake Rd., just west of S. Waterstone Dr. and kitty-corner to Cross Timbers Dr., according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department.
The truck went across the front lawns of two houses before crashing into a third house’s garage. The deep tire tracks it left in the grass and dirt indicate the driver never applied the brakes.
‘It looks like he accelerated the whole way through,? said Sheriff’s Deputy Jim Willyard, the first officer on the scene.
Willyard noted a witness sitting at the Cross Timbers St. stop sign reported it looked like the truck was doing 50 miles an hour across the front yards.
Based on witness statements and the strong smell of burnt rubber from the truck’s tires, Willyard said the driver ‘still had hisfoot on the gas while he was (sitting) in the garage.?
Not only did the truck smash through the garage wall, it struck a race car parked inside and pushed it into another vehicle parked next to it.
‘The race car looked totalled. I’m thinking it’s racing days are about over,? Willyard said. ‘The (other) one had to be taken away to a body shop because it was damaged on both sides.?
Following the crash, the driver, who was wearing a seat belt, complained of some eye pain. He was transported to McLaren Oakland hospital in Pontiac.
‘I talked to the doctor at the (Emergency Room) and he said he seems fine, but they’re going to run some neuoroligcal tests on him to find out what happened,? said Willyard, who noted the driver’s blood sugar level was normal.
The homeowner, Margaret Smith, 77, was not injured. She was washing and dressing when the accident happened.
‘I always hear trucks out here, but this one seemed to get louder and then there was a big crash,? she said. ‘It was just a very loud crash. I thought maybe something fell on my house.?
When she saw the truck sticking out the side of her garage, Smith, who’s lived in Oxford for 34 years, was shocked.
‘You never expect anything like that to happen,? Smith said.
Willyard indicated the driver was cited for careless driving.
‘I’m also going to send a request for driver evaluation to the Secretary of State,? he said.
