Coach says softball team headed in right direction

Tough times continue for the Oxford Varsity girls softball team as they lost a doubleheader to Brandon April 24 in their Flint Metro League opener.
Oxford lost the first game 6-5 and the second 4-1. Highlights from game #1 included Corinne Luxton going 2 for 4 with 1 RBI, Alyssa Hurtado 3 for 3 with 1 RBI, Lauren LaCroix 1 for 3 with 2 runs scored and Nicole Laidlaw 1 for 3 with 1 run scored.
Coach Sue Roeher said the offense ‘came alive,? but the team’s six defensive errors ‘cost us big.? Oxford was leading the Blackhawks until a ‘collapse? in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Brandon scored 3 runs and tied things up 5-5.
In game #2, Chelsea Kessler went 3 for 3 with 1 run scored, Sarah Paszko was 2 for 2, Hurtado 1 for 3 and Allie Laidlaw 1 for 3 with 1 RBI. Roeher said the fifth inning was once again the team’s downfall as they let Brandon score 3 runs to take a 3-1 lead.
‘Two errors along with three Brandon hits proved fatal for us,? she said.
Oxford only had 7 hits in the second game.
Despite the losses, Roeher said, ‘Overall, we are headed in the right direction going into the heart of our league season.?
‘With continued hard work and precision execution we should get some wins,? she said. Right now, the team is 3-8 overall and 0-2 in FML play.
