Learn CPR and break a world’s record

Imagine you’re at a family gathering and grandpa collapses. He has no pulse and is not breathing. Do you know what to do besides dial 9-1-1? If you don’t, two opportunities to learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) are coming up in the next few weeks. CPR is an emergency medical procedure for victims in either cardiac […]

Ja, the hockey team’s back from Sweden

Fifteen Oxford hockey players can now say they’re undefeated in Sweden. After playing four exhibition games in the Scandinavian country between Aug. 25 and Sept. 1, Oxford emerged with a victorious record of 3-0-1. ‘We came out fighting,? said Dave Hague, coach of the Oxford High School varsity hockey team. ‘They were just incredible games. […]

Pushing yourself to the limit

Some people enjoy biking. Some prefer to run. Others find it invigorating to go for a swim. Imagine doing all three in the same day while being timed. Five Oxford residents don’t have to imagine it because they’ll be doing it on Sunday, September 16 as they compete in Michigan’s Triathlon & Duathlon Championship at […]

Nine runners medal at Brother Rice Invite

Oxford’s cross country runners did well at the Brother Rice Invitational held on Saturday. Overall, the girls placed fifth out of 12 teams and won a trophy, while the boys placed seventh out of 13. ‘I was very pleased with their effort and their attitude,? said Coach Ray Sutherland. Senior Ben Cole finished the 5-kilometer […]

My Way

I have mixed views on this whole ordeal involving DDA Director Carolyn Bennett (see story on page 1). First off, spending $8,250 on fancy red polo or golf shirts for Celebrate Oxford volunteers is absolutely insane! Not only was it completely out of line, it’s a disgusting waste of $6,750 in public funds ? the […]

OMS wrestlers win first county tournament

‘Tough.? That’s the word Coach Kyle Brammer used over and over again to explain why, for the first time ever, Oxford Middle School’s wrestling team won the Oakland County Middle School Wrestling Championships held over the weekend at Rochester High School. ‘This is a very young, inexperienced team that’s really just tough. They show up […]

Rescue league needs $10K to get grant for surgical equipment

The good news is the K-9 Stray Rescue League in Oxford was awarded a $10,000 grant from the State of Michigan to help upgrade its facilities for spaying and neutering dogs. The bad news is the nonprofit group must first raise $10,000 and purchase the equipment in order to receive the state money as reimbursement. […]

Three brothers, three championships, one day

The hockey-loving Norris family of Oxford scored the ultimate hat trick on March 4. Playing for three different teams in three different locations, all three Norris boys ? Coale, Josh and Dalton ? won state championships in the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association. ‘It was just an absolute perfect hockey day for the family,? said their […]

DiCicco honored for helping disabled students

Even as a high school student, it was quite clear that Jeanne DiCicco was destined to enhance the lives of young people with disabilities. ‘I was always drawn to the special needs classroom,? she said. ‘I always wanted to go in and help. I always wanted to be with those kids that needed extra assistance.? […]

Appeals ‘down significantly’ at Boards of Review

It’s Board of Review time again in Oakland County, but the number of people showing up to appeal the assessed values of their properties is down. ‘We’re seeing a significant reduction in the amount of people that are challenging their assessments,? said Dave Hieber, manager of the Oakland County Equalization Division, which does the assessing […]
