Kitchen fire at Lake Villa MHP

An accidental fire brought Oxford firefighters to the Lake Villa Manufactured Home Park on Lakeville Road Friday, Jan. 2.
Fire personnel were dispatched to 236 Parker Lake Blvd. at 11:02 a.m. to extinguish a blaze that began in a kitchen garbage can, according to Fire Lt. Terry Roeher.
It appears an active cigarette butt was the cause of the fire, which remained contained to the kitchen, Roeher said.
Although the kitchen sustained “moderate fire damage,” the rest of the home suffered heavy smoke damage, Roeher said.
The lieutenant estimated there was between $8,000 and $10,000 worth of structural damage and $35,000 to $40,000 in contents damage. “There was a lot of stuff in there,” Roeher said.
No injuries were reported as the home was unoccupied at the time of the fire.
After the call was dispatched, Roeher said the first unit was on the scene at 11:05 a.m. and the first engine at 11:07 a.m. The fire was declared under control by 11:15 a.m.
Roeher said some roofers working on a nearby home reported the fire.
