A 17-year-old Oxford man is facing multiple criminal charges for allegedly breaking into an Oxford Village home, then stealing items from a vehicle parked at Oxford Middle School.
Jacob Jaquandre Bearden was arraigned in Rochester Hills 52-3 District Court on charges of first-degree home invasion (20-year felony), obstructing/resisting a police officer (two-year felony), stealing and retaining without consent a financial transaction device (four-year felony) and larceny from a vehicle (a misdemeanor). He’s being lodged in Oakland County Jail in lieu of posting two $10,000 cash/surety bonds.
Bearden allegedly entered the attached garage of a home on Lakes Edge Dr. in the Oxford Lakes subdivision on Friday, Aug. 17. He was discovered by the homeowner.
When the village police officer received the call, Bearden was last seen headed east on Lakes Edge Dr. towards Lakeville Rd. The officer headed to the Lake Villa Mobile Home Community in the hopes of finding Bearden entering the trailer park from the rear parking lot of OMS. There’s a commonly-used foot path connecting the two areas at the end of Parker Lake Dr. The officer waited there for about a minute, then proceeded to OMS.
There he saw Bearden emerge from between two parked vehicles, get on a red mountain bike and ‘quickly? begin riding toward the foot path leading to the trailer park, according to the police report. The officer gave chase in his patrol car. He pulled along side of Bearden and ordered him to stop. When Bearden allegedly failed to comply, the officer reached out his driver’s side window, grabbed a hold of his right sleeve cuff and began to slow down.
After the officer again ordered him to stop, Bearden allegedly continued to pedal quickly. Realizing that Bearden wasn’t going to comply, the officer turned the patrol car into the bicycle’s front tire, causing the suspect to fall off his bike and roll to his feet.
Bearden allegedly took off on foot and the officer chased him for about 100 yards through heavy brush and up an embankment, but lost sight of him in a swampy area behind the trailer park. A Lake Villa resident reported seeing Bearden exit the swamp and run to a vacant trailer. A K-9 track was conducted, but was fruitless.
Bearden was later spotted walking on Broadway St. in the village, but police were unable to locate him.
Based on an Oakland County Sheriff’s report, while Bearden was between those two parked vehicles at OMS, he allegedly broke into one of them and stole a debit card along with a checkbook, both belonging to a 33-year-old Clarkston woman. The checkbook was recovered at the scene.
Bearden was ultimately arrested by the sheriff’s Fugitive Apprehension Team on Monday, Aug. 20 in a mobile home park on Brown Rd. in Orion Township. He was taken into custody without incident.
During an interview with a sheriff’s sergeant and village officer, Bearden confessed to entering the Lakes Edge Dr. home’s attached garage, which he claimed was open, with the intent to steal a bicycle. He also confessed to entering the vehicle at OMS and stealing a debit card and checkbook from inside, according to the report. Bearden noted the vehicle was unlocked.
In the report, Bearden admitted to investigators that he dropped the debit card while running from police. He indicated that he did not attempt to use the card and did not know its whereabouts.
Bearden told investigators ‘he doesn’t know why (he stole these items), he just takes things when he sees them,? the report stated. ‘He stated that he was sorry and provided (police) with a written statement/apology.?
