Fourteen members of Oxford High School’s chapter of the National Honor Society gave up part of their Saturday to show their support for U.S. troops serving overseas.
The students partnered with Miracle Quilts of Oxford to make about 200 helmet liners, approximately 200 pillow cases and an estimated 150 neck coolers.
All of these items are designed to help the troops feel more comfortable, make their daily lives a little easier and let them know the folks back home haven’t forgotten about them.
Sewing machines hummed, irons let off some steam and scissors snipped away as the NHS students transformed themselves into a finely-tuned assembly line that, much like our brave soldiers, didn’t quit until the job was done.
They spent about 4? hours working away at the Oxford Public Library.
‘It was phenomenal,? said Carole Carroll, the Addison Township resident who founded Miracle Quilts of Oxford. ‘I didn’t hear one complaint . . . They were happy to be doing it for our troops.?
Miracle Quilts is a division of Desert Angels, Inc. The group meets on the second Saturday of each month at Independence Village of Waterstone to make quilts for wounded soldiers. ‘We’re going to be three years old next month,? Carroll said. ‘The first year we made 151 quilts and last year, we made 252. That’s incredible in this economy because it costs $75-$100 to make a quilt . . . There’s many hands that go into this project.?
