Spotting one big buck is enough to make any avid deer hunter’s heart begin racing.
Imagine seeing five of them, all lined up like three-dimensional targets on a range.
That’s exactly what Hugh Syron, of Addison Township, saw on his 11?-acre property between 7:30 and 8 a.m. Aug. 29.
‘I couldn’t believe it,? he said. ‘Boy, my eyes bugged out when I saw that.?
Syron’s lived there 13 years and indicated this sight was definitely a first.
‘The most I’ve seen is two big bucks. Never anything like that,? he said.
Syron, who will turn 66 on Sept. 17, stumbled upon this secret meeting of the big rack club when he went out to take care of his horses.
‘I went into the barn and I looked out and I saw these two big bucks standing there,? he explained. ‘I ran in the house and I grabbed my camera . . . I walked around the other side of the tree line and all five of them were standing there.
‘They just stood there looking at me while I was snapping the pictures. I think I took maybe 15 shots of them. They knew I was there and they just stood there and looked at me.?
Even though he’s hunted in places like Canada and Maine, Syron said he’d still ‘never seen anything like that before anywhere.?
The irony of this story is that Syron is not a deer hunter, so he’s not planning to do any free-range grocery shopping on his land this fall.
‘I do a little bird hunting,? he said. ‘I’ve got a couple of gun dogs, but I don’t hunt my own property. We all have horses around here, so none of us really like hunting around this area.?
Syron is a General Motors retiree. He spent 31 years with the auto company.
