It’s perhaps the most important lesson of all in life and young Jenna Fistler has already learned it ? friends should help friends.
Recently, the Daniel Axford (DA) Elementary second-grader approached the principal of her school about doing a fund-raiser to help her friend, Gillian Yocum, a second-grader at Leonard Elementary who is bravely battling leukemia.
The result ? the K-2 school raised $477 for Yocum.
Before she transferred to DA this year, Fistler attended Leonard where she befriended Yocum.
‘She’s kind and really nice,? Fistler said.
Reading the May 25 article in the Leader about Yocum’s leukemia made Fistler ‘very sad,? so she decided to share the news with her class.
Fistler’s teacher, Colleen Kazor, suggested she talk with Principal Joyce Brasington about doing a school-wide fund-raiser.
‘In three days, Jenna arranged it and put up all the posters to promote it,? Kazor said.
Fistler’s parents, Diane and Matt, were grateful to Kazor for giving their daughter a way to help her friend in need.
‘We want to thank you for helping her to learn that she can make a difference,? they wrote in an e-mail. ‘You helped her to realize that she can make an impact on the world and that she is important. We believe this is an extremely important life lesson.?
