Lakeville Elementary students in teacher Christine Vince’s fourth-grade science classes used their considerable creativity and compassion for the planet to come up with projects that promoted environmental awareness in honor of Earth Day (April 22).
‘If we didn’t have Earth Day and cleanups, the Earth would probably catch on fire because there’s so much oil and trash,? said student Emily Lawrie.
Vince asked her 62 students to focus their project on one of four eco-friendly categories ? Earth appreciation, conservation, recycling and animal awareness.
Students expressed themselves in a variety of ways including posters, poems, songs, videos, power-point presentations, even a compost sample.
Victoria vonHerrmann constructed a diorama that used cotton balls to show all the air pollution generated by SUVs, semi-trucks and airplanes, which were represented by little toy versions.
‘This (pollution) is affecting the polar bears because it’s making the Earth warmer,? she said. ‘The Earth’s temperature has risen by one degree and the glaciers are starting to melt.?
Patricia Vernau created a colorful poster about ways to ‘let the Earth be happy again? such as planting trees and recycling.
Her project reminded people that ‘Everyday is Earth Day, if it’s cold or wet or hot. Pitch in to save the planet, it’s the only one we’ve got.?
