Author wins Mom’s seal

An Oxford children’s author got the official seal of approval last week from a national organization dedicated to promoting all things family-friendly.
‘I felt humbled given the amount of children’s books printed every year,? said Ronald Meyer.
Meyer’s book ‘Freddy Fox? was a 2008 Silver Recipient of the Mom’s Choice Award.
The Mom’s Choice Awards (MCA) is an annual awards program that recognizes authors, inventors, companies, parents and others for their efforts in creating quality family-friendly media, products and services.
Parents, educators, librarians and retailers rely on MCA evaluations when selecting quality materials for children and families. The MCA seal, a silver emblem which now appears on the cover of Meyer’s book, helps families and educators navigate the vast array of products and services to make informed decisions.
‘It was a surprise,? Meyer said. ‘It’s not something you plan on, it’s something that happens.?
Released in March 2005, ‘Freddy Fox? is a 32-page book that follows the adventures of a young red fox whose mother teaches him life lessons using other forest critters as examples.
Twenty-eight pages of the book contain full color photos of creatures taken by Meyer, a professional wildlife photographer/artist, over the years.
The self-published book originally started out as a gift for his young grandson, Teddy, but it’s now such a success Meyer spends lots of time visiting schools and libraries to speak and sign copies.
Locally, ‘Freddy Fox? is available for $19.95 at Great Lakes Mercantile in downtown Oxford. It’s also available for checkout at the Oxford Public Library.
In September 2007, Meyer released a second 32-page children’s book entitled, ‘Casey Cougar,? which gives facts about the mountain lion’s habitat, den, food sources, range, etc. It also sells for $19.95.
