In two days, Oxford’s Nathan Gerbe will find out if he’s college hockey’s top player.
Last week, it was announced that Gerbe, a 20-year-old junior forward with the Boston College Eagles, was one of three Hobey Baker Award Hat Trick finalists.
Each year the Hobey Baker Award, which is the equivalent of college football’s Heisman Trophy, is given to the top college hockey player who exhibits strength of character on and off the ice, displays outstanding skills in all phases of the game, demonstrates sportsmanship and exels in scholastic achievement.
A total of 101 players started out in the running for this year’s Hobey Baker Award.
Gerbe, a first-team All Hockey East honoree, tallied 60 points ? 30 goals and 30 assists ? in 41 games this season. He’s ranked second in the country in points and third nationally in goals.
At the NCAA Northeast Regional and Hockey East Tournament, Gerbe earned All-Tournament Team accolades. He was named the Hockey East Tournament’s Most Valuable Player after registered four goals and five assists in four BC victories.
He’s a three-time Hockey East League Player of the Month Award winner this season, having earned the honor for December, January and March.
In March, Gerbe registered a team-high 15 points ? eight goals and seven assists ? in nine games.
Gerbe will learn if he’s the 2008 Hobey Baker Award recipient at NCAA Frozen Four Championship Friday, April 11 in Denver, Colorado. The winner will be announced lived at 7:30 p.m. (EST) on the ESPNU network.
The BC Eagles and Gerbe will be competing in the Frozen Four to become college hockey’s national champion.
