Four voter precincts in Oxford Township will be consolidated into two precincts for the May 8 school election as a way to simplify things and save money.
The consolidation, approved 6-0 by township officials last week, would only apply to precincts currently housed in the same building.
Voters in precincts 2 and 7 will continue to cast their ballots at Oxford Elementary School (109 Pontiac St.), but they will be considered one precinct for the May election.
The same goes for voters in precincts 3 and 5 at the Oxford Free Methodist Church (790 S. Lapeer Rd.).
By doing this, each voting location will only need one set of ballots, one tabulating machine and one set of precinct workers as opposed to two of everything.
‘That would save the township quite a bit of money,? said Trustee Pat Fitchena, who sits on the township’s Election Commission.
This precinct consolidation is only for the May 8 election.
It’s not a permanent change, according to officials.
