Village leases Glaspie property for winter storage

A business arrangement that will financially benefit Oxford Village along with its residents and taxpayers was approved by council last week.
Council voted unanimously Oct. 17 to lease the approximately 10,000-square-foot building, which sits on the property the village owns at 98 S. Glaspie St., to Oakland Mobile Marine for indoor winter storage of boats, RVs and trailers from Nov. 1 through May 31, 2007.
Established in 1998, Oakland Mobile Marine offers a complete line of marine services and is located at 375 S. Glaspie St. in the village.
Under the lease, the Oxford-based business agreed to assume all the costs, liability and labor related to this lease and pay the village 50 percent of ‘any and all storage fees? on a monthly basis.
Oakland Mobile Marine charges a $500 storage fee for boats during the winter months. RVs and trailers will be charged the ‘going rate? for storing such equipment, according to Oakland Mobile Marine owner Daniel Wells.
Also, all village residents and village taxpayers wishing to store a boat, RV or trailer (limit one per household) at the Glaspie property will receive a 40 percent discount. It’s hoped the discounted storage rate will encourage village residents to store their boats and vehicles inside rather than on their property.
Originally, the lease was only going to offer the discount to village residents.
However, Clerk Chrisine Burns argued there are many taxpayers, both large and small, who do not live in the village, but helped subsidize the government’s purchase of the 98 S. Glaspie St. property for $700,000 earlier this year.
Oakland Mobile Marine has also agreed to provide $1 million in comprehensive insurance with the village named as co-insured, fully covering and indemnifying the municipality from any claim which may arise from the lease agreement.
The building will be secured by Oakland Mobile Marine and the stored contents checked on three to four times a week, Wells noted.
