Newton’s Law of Gravity got quite the workout last week as Leonard Elementary held an ‘Egg’stravaganza, during which about 60 eggs were dropped from the school’s roof.
Organized by Leonard teachers Chad Boyd and Mike Sudrovech, the family fun night was centered around local fathers and their kids working together to design and build various contraptions to keep their eggs from breaking or cracking.
Sixty-three families or 164 people participated in the event.
Milk cartons, newspaper, rubber bands, egg cartons, glue, string, cotton balls, popsicle sticks, macaroni and tape ? lots and lots of tape ? were just some of the items used to either cushion the egg’s impact or construct mini parachutes.
Roughly half the eggs survived the 20-something-foot fall to the concrete ground, according to Boyd. The rest became scrambled casualities.
While the egg drop was loads of fun, Boyd said, ‘The idea behind the event was to invite dads to the school.?
With so many mothers already involved at the school, ‘We want the dads to feel welcome too,? he explained.
‘When dads show their involvement and interest in school, I believe the students have a greater understanding of the importance of their education,? Boyd said. ‘It was great seeing the dads intereracting with their children.?
In addition to the egg drop, dads and kids also played basketball and other games, solved puzzles together and watched a movie in the school’s library.
‘We tried to provide an entertaining event where dads and kids could interact,? Boyd said. ‘This family interaction was not only educational, but also fun.?
As one of only two male teachers at Leonard, Boyd noted there’s a real need for more men to be involved in the elementary schools.
‘There’s not many of us guys at the elementary level,? he said.
