Walking out of the front doors of Lake Orion High School, students have seen an alarming visual of what could happen if they are drunk, or distracted, driving.
Taped off on the sidewalk for the last week was a crash vehicle placed by the Oakland County Sheriff Office to remind students the consequences of irresponsible driving.
“We wanted them to see a visual, with all the parties and festivities that will be going on over the next couple months, of what could happen if you are drinking and driving, or distracted driving,” high school liaison deputy Claudio Lopez said.
The LOHS leadership class created a sign with the phrase heard all too often, but sometimes disregarded: stay alive, don’t drink and drive.
“It’s scary. Makes you drive safer and more aware of what can actually happen out in the read world, definitely eye opening,” leadership junior Andrew Schoenjahn said of the smashed vehicle.
“You hear about this stuff but when you actually see it it’s really eye opening,” leadership sophomore Meredith Stalions agreed.
Principal Steve Hawley urges students to be responsible over the summer while away from school.
“During prom season, the end of the school year, and the summer months when our students are away from the high school, we want them to leave remembering that they do have a great responsibility each time they sit down and get behind the wheel,” he said. “Our students’ safety is paramount. It’s number one in everything we do.”
