Pretty soon little league outfielders, pitchers, and catchers will get to play under the lights at Friendship Park.
At Monday’s Orion Township board meeting, trustees approved a project that would put ballfield lighting at two of the four baseball fields.
McNulty Electric Inc. was awarded the contract to install the lights as they were the lowest qualified bidder coming in at $305,780. McNulty was one of five companies that submitted bids.
The project is part of the Land Water Conservation Fund grant the township received that would reimburse $100,000 of the cost of the project once it was completed.
The Lexington, Mich.-based company will install ten light poles equipped with halogen bulbs and the project should take nine weeks to complete.
Parks Director Aaron Whatley and Supervisor Chris Barnett looked into LED lighting for the ballfield lights but given their expected usage time and the higher cost to install LED lights, it would be 20 years before the lights would save the township money.
