Volleyball tops OAA Red after comeback victory over Clarkston

The Dragon volleyball team continued their winning streak, earning wins in two close games against the Clarkston Wolves and Detroit Country Day Yellowjackets last week.

After falling to the Wolves in their pre-season match-up, this time around the Lake Orion ladies delivered Clarkston their first league loss of the season after a 3-2 Dragon comeback victory.

The Dragons fell behind early losing the first set, 18-25, and the second set, 23-25.

Momentum shifted for the Dragons at the beginning of the third set when the Dragons took an early five-point lead before a Clarkston rally to tie the set at 25.

Junior Nina Horning closed out the set with two back-to-back kills for a Dragon win, 30-28. Lake Orion kept up the energy taking the fourth set 25-12.

Lake Orion sealed the match with a 15-12 victory in the fifth and final set.

The win improves the Dragon’s record to 3-0 in the OAA Red. Lake Orion now holds the first-place spot in the Red league with Clarkston trailing in second with a 5-1 record.

Horning again lead the team with 34 kills, while senior and captain Jaina Macaulay had an impressive 40 assists. Horning, along with senior Lauren Peters and senior and captain Malinda Brunk, contributed greatly in serve receives with 27, 31 and 18 respectively.

On Thursday, the ladies took on Detroit Country Day in a non-league matchup defeating the Yellowjackets 3-2.

The Dragons pulled ahead early on, taking the first set 25-21 and the second set 25-19.

Detroit Country Day picked up the pace, dominating Lake Orion in the third set 25-10 and sealing the deal in the fourth set with a 25-23 win.

The Dragons came together to clinch the victory, 15-13, in the fifth and final set.

Game highlights include Horning, who led the team with 25 kills, while Peters contributed 12.

Brunk led the Dragons in digs and serve receives with 13 and 26, respectively. while Horning and Peters followed closely behind with 12 digs each and 22 and 24 serve receives respectively. Macaulay had 39 assists.

The ladies are back in action on Oct. 5 after Review press time for another OAA Red match-up against Birmingham Seaholm.

Seaholm is currently 3-2 in the OAA Red and holds the fourth-place spot in the league.
