The Lake Orion United Methodist Church (LOUMC) is hosting a 5K run to support their efforts in helping under privileged students in both the Oxford and Lake Orion school districts.
The Help Kids Succeed 5K Run/Walk will take place on Saturday, July 2, at 9:30 a.m. and according to LOUMC Pastor John Ball, all the proceeds go directly to the students in the school district.
Ball works with educators in both school districts to help identify students in need and students that may fall through the cracks in the system. Even this year LOUMC was approached about a student whose family was under hefty financial strain but the student needed hearing aids. Because of events like the 5K, the church was able to purchase the hearing aids.
LOUMC will also help students with medical bills, prescription medication, clothing and, according to Ball, any sort of emergency need that comes or something that may go unnoticed.
“We’re not only passionate about students and families in our community but we’re passionate about being able to help those in need,” he said. “The families and those kids that are facing situations might need some help navigating some of the challenges and that’s what the church aims to do.”
The 5K will start at the LOUMC located at 140 E. Flint St. in downtown Lake Orion. Registration is $25 and in order to register, runners and walkers should go to active.com and search OXLO 5K.
