LO Horseshoe Club begins new season

The Lake Orion Horseshoe Club’s 2019 season begins at 7 p.m. May 7 and new and prospective members are welcome to join the oldest horseshoe club in Michigan.
“Have you been telling yourself you would like to get some exercise, meet new people and have some exciting competition pitching horseshoes? Well the wait is over, this is your chance to be part of the best kept secret in Lake Orion,” said club President Ron Price. “Our club was established in 1960 in Bunny Run and moved to our existing location in 1965, right by the new fire station.
The club meets regularly on Tuesdays at the horseshoe pits off Anderson Street behind Children’s Park for practice and league competition and has some weekend tournaments. The club has also hosted the Michigan state doubles tournament for several years.
“Our league is 15 weeks, with a banquet and awards in August for only $40. If you have horseshoes bring them, or we have some loaners for you to use that still have a lot of ringers left in them. We hope to see some new faces playing this season or just stop by to say ‘Hi’ and see what we are all about,” Price said.
While many people may have only played horseshoes in their backyards and are concerned about playing in competition, Price says the club offers instruction to help pitchers of all skill levels improve their game.
“Everyone plays with a handicap scoring system that makes it fair and competitive for all,” Price said. Women pitch from 30 feet and all our players will be happy to assist anyone who would like to play in the league and may need some coaching.”

“The Lake Orion Horseshoe Club is very excited about all the changes coming to the village. Our well-manicured, lighted courts are surrounded by improvements. The new Paint Creek Trail runs right beside our courts and we have plans for this horseshoe club to be the best, the largest in Michigan, an organization that cares about its members and the community,” Price said. — J.N.
