Lake Orion’s girls tennis team started their division play a few weeks ago on April 11. Since then the team has taken a few tough loses to West Bloomfield (6-3), Rochester (5-4), Stoney Creek (8-1).
The ladies recently added another win to their resume with a big win over Almont High School on April 24.
The Dragons swept the board winning eight matches and only losing one.
Most notably, one of the newer additions to the team, freshman Nicole Luna proved yet again why she is the no. 1 single on the court defeating her Almont competitor in just two sets.
Several other Lake Orion players also defeated their opponents in two set matches including junior and co-captain Lauren Murray and Greer McElroy.
The Dragons no. 1 leading doubles team Xuan Xhan Tang and Rachel Yim also made quick work taking down Almont’s no. 1 doubles team in two sets as well.
Senior co-captain Shreya Desai and Mia Merrell, no. 2 doubles, and Emma Quinn and Nadia Olejnik, no. 3 doubles, both came out with full board sweeps winning each set 6-0.
Coming off of the big win, the ladies prepared to take on the Clarkston Wolves, another OAA White team and school rival.
The close game ended out of the Dragon’s favor with Lake Orion falling 4-5.
The ladies are hoping to improve throughout the season, and give their district and division competition a run for their money.
Last year the team went 7-6. this year they’re hoping for something similar if not better.
“We play a pretty tough schedule here in Oakland County,” head coach Eric Bracciano said. “Obviously we’d like to finish toward the top of our league and we’ll see in the next couple of weeks if we can make that happen…as long as we stay healthy I think we’ll be in the running to compete for something like that. Our league is very competitive but we’re right in the mix there with some of the other schools.”
The ladies are set to take on another OAA White competitor North Farmington on April 30 after Lake Orion Review press time.
