Lake Orion girls track & field wins regional championship, individuals qualify for state meet

The LOHS Girls track team won the regional championship at Rochester HS on May 18 scoring 131 points to out distance 2nd place Grand Blanc with 84 points and 3rd place Waterford Kettering with 71 points.

The girls were able to outdistance 13 other teams on a warm and mostly sunny day. The girls scored in 13 of 17 events and qualified 9 girls to the State Meet at East Kentwood High School on June 2nd.

The Lady Dragons placed first in 3 relays with all members qualifying to the State Meet. Makayla Allen, Madison Eaton, Shantel Stanley and Melissa Symons ran the 4x100m relay; Eaton, Sophie Novak, Josie Arnold and Symons the 4x400m relay and the 4x800m relay team was Novak, Ciara Nolan, Allison

Sherman and Arnold, setting the school record at 9 minutes and 23 seconds.

Symons also placed 1st and set the school record in the 300m hurdles at 44.04 seconds and 1st in the 100m hurdles, qualifying to states in both.

Colleen Campbell placed 2nd in both the pole vault and the high jump qualifying for states in both. She also placed 8th in the long jump.

Madison Eaton qualified to states in the 100m and 300m hurdles placing 2nd in both.

In the 800m run, Sophie Novak placed 2nd, Josie Arnold 5th and Ciara Nolan 7th with all three qualifying to the state meet.

Allison Sherman ran a personal best in the 3200m run and also qualified to states placing 3rd.

Rounding out the scoring for the Dragons in the field events was Cassie Moreau who placed 4th in the discus and 6th in the shot put; Heather DeSamper 4th in the pole vault and 8th in the high jump; Sarah Griffin placed 5th in the pole vault and 6th in the long jump; and Mary Smythe placed 7th in the discus.

The 4x200m relay of Allen, Stanley, Grace Winkler and Griffin placed 7th.

The top 8 places in each event scored points and received medals.

The Dragons, both girls and boys teams, compete Friday at Novi High School in the Oakland County meet. — S.C.
