Last Wednesday, the Dragon wrestlers competed in another OAA Red league meet. This go-around their opponents both hailed from Rochester.

The first contest of the night saw Lake Orion battle Stoney Creek. The Dragons started strong with wins by junior Cavan McIntyre by pin, sophomores Dorian Hill (17-5) and Micah Wellbaum by a score of 5-0. Two pins were added by senior wrestlers Anthony Vellucci and Dominic Orselli.

But Stoney Creek came back with their lower weights winning the remaining matches and pulling out a 48-25 victory.

The Dragons fared better against Rochester Adams getting a 42-31 win. Wellbaum got another victory with a major decision, with Vellucci following with a 6-2 triumph. Orselli and freshman Chad Parker and Hunter Swatosh each scored pins in their victories. Junior Ryder Smith won his match by medical disqualification while McIntyre finished the match with another win.

Friday brought the same outcome as Wednesday – one win; one loss. Lake Orion started the night against Division 2 powerhouse Gaylord. The Dragons only managed three wins against a strong Blue Devil team, but they were impressive wins. Heavyweight Edwin Morris got a pin, as did Swatosh. Smith dominated his opponent scoring a technical fall win 17-2.

The last match was against host Caro. Normally a competitive foe, this year the Caro team was a victim of COVID-19 and had only six wrestlers on their squad. Lake Orion benefitted from this with most matches won by void. Morris and Orselli pinned their opponents and Swatosh also came out on top with a win.

This week is a dual meet at Waterford Kettering with John Glen and De La Salle joining.

Friday will be a home meet where Lake Orion will host Midland, South Lion and Henry Ford. It will also be Senior night as Lake Orion recognizes the senior class of wrestlers.
