Dragon grapplers take 2nd place at OAA league tournament

The Dragon wrestling team concluded their regular season with a second-place finish at the OAA Red league tournament.

Lake Orion squared off against Red Division rivals Clarkston, Oxford, Rochester, Rochester Adams and Birmingham Seaholm at Clarkston High School.

The team wrestled well finishing behind only Oxford.

Team results were: Oxford 189.5, Lake Orion 160, Clarkston 155.5, Rochester 132, Rochester Adams 65, Seaholm 55.

Top individual finishers:

Five Dragons came in first place: senior Andrew Miller, wrestling at 145-pounds, won a close match 5-3 against Oxford’s Sal Vackaro.

Junior Anthony Vellucci won the 160-pound weight class with a 6-2 victory over Birmingham Seaholm’s Jackson Vance.

Junior Dominic Orselli beat Rochster Adams’ Joseph Dreon for the fourth time this season to claim the 171-pound weight class.

Senior Issac Kinne, the 189-pound winner, and Freshman Dorian Hill, wrestling at 119 pounds, handily beat their opponents from Oxford and Rochester for first place finishes.

Three wrestlers also placed second at the event. The 215-pound title went to Clarkston’s Drew Stark over Lake Orion freshman Judah Kinne.

Senior Mason Slocum lost a close heavyweight match that needed overtime for a decision.

Senior Nick Nowakowski finished the night with a second place finish behind Jack Thompson of Oxford in the 130-pound weight class.

Post-season action began today with team district competition, hosted by Lake Orion. Clarkston, Waterford Mott and Waterford Kettering will compete to move on to regionals next week.

Individual districts are set to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at Rochester High School.
